Guidelines for Wednesday Sharing Day

Sharing day has become a favored tradition at OCC, and provides a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop expressive language, learn to be respectful of others, and extend their focus and attention as we take turns sharing.

For this year we would like to set some guidelines which will help us all to make sharing day fit more positively with our philosophy, as we learn together to respect the earth, appreciate each person’s uniqueness and develop our community by getting to know more about each other.

Children may share:
1. Something from nature
2. Something hand made
3. A treasured item representing a trip or vacation
4. A picture of someone in their family or your child doing something special.
5. A work of art they really like.

Toys will not be permitted. Many problems arise when regular toys are brought into the classroom. Children inexperienced with emotions like envy and jealousy do not know how to express those feelings to classmates. These negative feelings cast shadow of unhappiness and discontent.

Other students are very protective of that special toy and spend a lot of psychic energy making sure it is safe. These additional situations prevent the classroom environment from returning to the normal working atmosphere.

There will be special sharing days throughout the school year such as Doll Day, Stuffed Animal Day, Hero, and Costume Day. We know that by learning little by little about each others interest, abilities and families, we will come to know our friends more deeply and build a stronger community of caring people.

Thank you for helping us make “Wednesday is Sharing Day” special for all of us.
