OCC Plastic Recycling Project - Caps, Caps, Caps for Recycling
OCC is continuing to participate in the Aveda Cap recycling program. I love this program and so do the children. Each morning several children excitedly deposit their caps in the storage container. They are so proud to watch the container fill up with caps of all colors. I love it because I've always hated to recycle the container but then throw away the cap. It just seemed wrong. I love making a pile of caps on the windowsill ready to be taken to school. It's a small thing but it keeps me remembering to reuse, recycle, and re-imagine the stuff I throw away.
From Aveda's web site "Aveda realizes that the U.S. does not have an operable system in place to recycle plastic bottle caps. They can become trash and dangerous pollutants, littering our beaches and oceans. Using collected caps, Aveda has been able to work closely with our suppliers to develop ways to make new caps and containers. This project teaches students that we are all responsible for taking care of our environment. It empowers us all to stimulate change on a local and national level."
We are asking that you collect plastic bottle caps from common household items – soda & water bottles, shampoo containers, detergent, etc. Encourage your child to bring these bottle caps to school where they can deposit them in the OCC collection bin (the white "oscar the grouch" type metal trash can with a lid) located in the school lobby.
